A Perfect Match! 135 RSOM Students Learn Their Residencies on Match Day

Cheers and smiles filled the atmosphere as 135 graduating students from the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University opened their envelopes and found out their residency assignments at the school’s annual Match Day event. Match Days are a time-honored tradition held each year simultaneously at medical schools nationwide.
Held March 20 in the Bauman Center at Stony Brook University, RSOM’s Match Day event brought students, family, friends and faculty together to celebrate this major step toward becoming a physician.

Collectively, the students matched to residencies in 19 states. Two-thirds will be staying in New York State for their training, and 22 percent will launch their careers as residents at Stony Brook Medicine. Most residency assignments begin on or around July 1.
In addition to the Stony Brook Medicine placements, RSOM students landed residency positions at other leading hospitals and academic centers in New York and around the country, including Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Yale New Haven Hospital, Georgetown University, Baylor College of Medicine and University of California, San Diego Medical Center.
The top four specialties the students match to are internal medicine (32), anesthesiology (17), psychiatry (14) and emergency medicine (11).
“Our students achieved an impressive 96 percent match rate, with one-third of our students matching into primary care specialties, which helps fill a critical community need around the country,” said Peter Igarashi, MD, Knapp Dean of the RSOM.

Igarashi pointed out that in addition to the students’ matches, 100 percent of Stony Brook Medicine’s total 162 categorical residency positions — offered at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital — were filled.
“This result is a testament to the quality of our programs and the commitment of our faculty, staff and learners to graduate medical education,” Igarashi added.
More than 38,000 medical students matched to residency programs nationwide in 2026. This new crop of physicians will help with the continual need for more physicians to take care of our population, including a growing aging population.
Match Day is administered by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
