Since 1991, the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University (LISVH) has served as one of Long Island’s premier providers of skilled nursing services for veterans, spouses of veterans and Gold Star parents.

The 350-bed facility broke ground on an innovative three-season recreational space for residents and their families on June 13. The ADA-compliant outdoor space will be used for social gatherings and therapeutic activities, allowing residents and their guests to enjoy a tranquil space outside their rooms.

The space will include an entertainment area equipped with seating, a kitchen, a movie screen and heating and cooling solutions that enable veterans and their families to enjoy the outdoor space throughout the year.

“Each day we work hard to enhance the quality of life of our veterans, while honoring their sacrifice and service,” said Fred Sganga, executive director of LISVH. “For many years, renovating our courtyard has been a top priority. This much-needed space is crucial to the mental and emotional well-being of our veterans and their families.”

The restoration of the adaptive courtyard, expected to take about a year, is the largest outdoor renovation project ever at the Long Island State Veterans Home. The space will deliver countless meaningful benefits — both seen and felt — for veterans and their loved ones.

The LISVH courtyard restoration project was made possible through the generosity of Bahnik Foundation, Inc., the Island Outreach Foundation and other friends of the Veterans Home. “As a veteran, I’ve spent my life fighting for freedom, and here at the Veterans Home, freedom looks like being able to sit in the sun, hear the birds sing and share stories with my fellow residents,” said Chuck Kurtske, a resident and president of the resident council at the LISVH. “A renovated courtyard would mean everything to us. It’s not just about fresh air; it’s about having a space where we can garden, play cards under the gazebo, enjoy music and holiday events or simply walk safely with family and friends. These moments bring joy, movement and connection back into our lives, and that makes all the difference.”

LISVH provides skilled nursing care, adult day healthcare and short-term rehabilitation to the 85,000 veterans who reside on Long Island. It has earned the reputation as a leader among the nation’s 171 state veterans homes, as well as private long-term care and rehabilitation care providers.
