President-Elect Andrea Goldsmith Visits with Stony Brook Medicine
Stony Brook University President-Elect Andrea Goldsmith was on East Campus April 18 for a visit focused on the clinical enterprise of Stony Brook Medicine.
Goldsmith, who will begin her tenure as Stony Brook’s seventh president on August 1, met with members of the clinical leadership team and had the opportunity to engage in thoughtful conversations about the Stony Brook health system — its achievements, the challenges it faces and the people and communities served.
Stony Brook Medicine Executive Vice President William Wertheim, MD, in a message to the Medicine community, said that Goldsmith “expressed genuine enthusiasm about being here, about the work we do, and an eagerness to learn more about Stony Brook Medicine. It was clear that she appreciated the chance to see first-hand how we deliver care, and the breadth of health care resources and services we provide.”

Leadership provided Goldsmith with a comprehensive overview of Stony Brook Medicine, followed by a tour of several key clinical areas, led by Wertheim and Carol Gomes, CEO/COO of Stony Brook University Hospital. The tour included the Emergency Department, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, the Cancer Center and the Cerebrovascular Center.
The tour visits showcased the innovation and dedication that define Stony Brook Medicine’s work and highlighted the strategies being pursued to expand access to the highest quality healthcare across Long Island and beyond.
“It was a meaningful opportunity that began building connections between Dr. Goldsmith and our clinical leadership, and explicitly demonstrated the impact of the care we deliver every day,” Wertheim said. “I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Goldsmith on several occasions as she prepares to assume her role. I am confident that under her leadership, we will continue to advance our shared vision of excellence in healthcare, education, and research.”
Stony Brook Medicine oversees all of Stony Brook University’s health-related initiatives: education, research and patient care. It includes the five Health Sciences schools — Renaissance School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, School of Health Professions, School of Nursing and School of Social Welfare — as well as the Program in Public Health. It also includes Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, Long Island State Veterans Home, and more than 200 community-based healthcare settings throughout Suffolk County.
